Avanti Design 85

Designed for Walter Rothschild and launched in 1937, Avanti was one of very few Sparkman & Stephens designed built by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company of Bristol, Rhode Island. Walter Rothschild was the great-grandson of a founder of Abraham & Straus, Abraham Abraham, and was the fourth generation of his family to serve as the companys president.

Avanti was the next in a progression of earlier designs including Dorade (design #7), Stormy Weather (design #27), Edlu I (design#35) and Santana (design #59).

Here are the plans.

Unfortunately, she was destroyed in Padanaram Harbor in the hurricane of 1954. Click here for related posting.

Heres an article from Wooden Boat magazine showing Avanti under sail and on the beach after the hurricane. Double click for readable view.
